It’s time for us to sign off for the festive period – picture a fantastically ornate majolica sleigh full of Pattern Books and Art & Design folios being pulled away into the frosty stores by a brace of Parian reindeer – but not before we take a look back over the last 12 months to remind ourselves of what we’ve been up to… and yes, of course there’ll be another Hildesheimer & Faulkner Christmas card to mark the occasion! 😀
In September our long-running Magnificent Majolica and Truth, Beauty, Power series’ drew to a close, but not without a final flourish courtesy of what was probably our most ambitious Anniversary Update yet. We added the entire contents of SD 1705/MS6000 and SD 1705/MS6000/1 – otherwise known as the “Dresser Folio” – to the online catalogue in the form of two fully zoomable interactives, as well as bringing both groups together in a bonus “virtual table” view of all 125 Dresser artworks for the announcement blog post.
Both Magnificent Majolica and Truth, Beauty, Power found their way into our even-longer-running Pairing Up series, and our positively ancient – but much-loved – Folio Friday series continued to uncover wonderful artworks from the collection. In August and November we deviated slightly from the standard Art & Design folio sequence to highlight designs which we’d discovered during our work to place out-of-sequence artworks back into their original locations. (They’ll most likely find their way into a folio box eventually however, so a very minor deviation…)
Since launching our Book Reader (now simply “Interactive”) tab a few anniversaries ago we’ve been trickling more browsable volumes into the online catalogue, highlighted via our Page-by-Page themed search. This year we added a couple of recipe books in the hand of Art Director Léon Arnoux – perfect for brushing up on your French – and we’re currently in the process of preparing another volume by another French artist for release very soon. (Look at us, dropping teasers for 2020 already!)
Having been immersed in the wonders of the Minton Archive for all this time it was bound to happen sooner or later and so 2019 was the year one of us finally acquired a piece of Minton. Our subsequent Show and Tell gave us the perfect opportunity to blog about the Pattern and Estimate Books and what you can expect to find in these resources – since then we’ve further updated the catalogue with 327 popular pattern names (and their numbers) to make it easier to pick out finding numbers for any in-person visits or online enquiries you might make.
It turns out we’ve been rather busy bees looking at all that, and yet we still found time to celebrate Valentines Day and, much more importantly, Potteries Bottle Oven Day too! But now Parian Rudolf (with a most un-Parian-like red nose… we didn’t really think this through, did we?) is getting restless so we’d better fly. Merry Christmas everyone!
